Alternative Name
Central American Alligator, American Saltwater Crocodile
Scientific Name: Crocodylus acutus
Basic Info
A mature American Crocodile usually measures between five and six meters, although seven-meter animals have been reported. They are usually olive brown in color and have silver irises. Younger animals tend to be lighter or tan in color. Banding is often visible over their tails and bodies. Very old animals may be almost gray in color. American Crocodiles have little knobs in front of each eye. They tend to have less dorsal armor than a number of other crocodiles, and the plates that are present are irregular. Their snouts are tapered and their bodies are slender. American Crocodiles have between 66 and 68 teeth.
Health
American Crocodiles require large habitats involving both land and water areas. Water should be freshwater, particularly for young animals and hatchlings that cannot tolerate high levels of salinity. Because of their large size, American Crocodiles are potentially dangerous even if they are not overtly aggressive and should be handled with caution.
Breeding
The courtship for American Crocodiles can last up to two months and occurs in spring or early summer. Usually, it is the female that initiates mating behavior. Females will build nests according to the habitat they live in. Where sandy embankments are available, American Crocodiles will dig burrow-like nests. In areas that flood readily, American Crocodiles will construct tall mound nests to elevate their eggs. On average, 38 eggs are laid, though numbers between 20 and 60 have been reported. At the beginning of the rainy season the eggs hatch, usually about 90 days after they were deposited. Hatchlings are about 25 centimeters long. Although varying degrees of care and protection from the adults have been observed, the greenish colored hatchlings usually leave the area where they were hatched within a few days.
Habitat
Commonly found in tropical wetland areas
Behavior
American Crocodiles are rather adaptable and will dig burrows into embankments in harsh or adverse conditions. They aestivate in these dens until conditions become more favorable. If the area where American Crocodiles live becomes uninhabitable, they will travel for surprising distances over land areas to find new homes. They can live in both brackish and freshwater. In colder weather, American Crocodiles usually move inland or become largely inactive.
Origin
Central and South America
History
The American Crocodile is native to the central region of the Americas, ranging through Central America up into southern areas of North America and down into more temperate regions of South America. They are most commonly found in tropical wetland areas. Although once endangered, the IUCN status of the American Crocodile has been revised, and this reptile is now listed as a vulnerable species. In certain areas of its range, however, it remains endangered. It was heavily hunted in the mid twentieth century for its skin, and today is often forced out of areas it previously inhabited due to human disturbance, poaching, and habitat loss. The American Crocodile is farmed and conservation programs are underway.
Common Foods
American Crocodiles feed at night on a variety of animals including fish and birds.

The View From Down under: America Through the Eyes of the Australians and the New Zealanders
The View From Down Under Most Americans I think have a high regard for Aussies, based on our traditional mutual support of one another in our common wars. These positive views were I believe re-enforced recently with the rather sudden appearance of a whole bunch of first-rate Aussie movies in the 70s -- among some of my favorites would be Gallipoli and Breaker Morant. Then of course everybody loved Mel Gibson and Crocodile Dundee. Aussie culture quickly became the latest rage with the Ameri Continue reading
What Hillary Didn’t Say, and Why
It must be hard to give a good speech when you know that even before you finish, people will be dissecting your every word and movement. A “body language expert” gave his impressions of what Hillary really meant. Dan Hill…author of “Face Time,” told CNN that even while the words Clinton delivered offered an unequivocal endorsement of Barack Obama, her body language was much less affirmative. “When she spoke about Obama, she really did not emote very much,” Hill said. “The only thing she show Continue reading

The day after Hillary Clinton delivered one of the best political speeches in American history -- CNN has come out with this bit of fucking loveliness: (CNN) -- What did Hillary Clinton's body language give away at the Democratic National Convention? Is it a Coincidence?
As the Democratic National Convention slithers into full gear, I asked myself if it was simply a coincidence that the Discovery Channel aired the Sept.11th 2001 Documentary about the World Trade Center attacks during prime time just as Michelle Obama took the podium? Is it a coincidence that these Dems wrap themselves in patriotism for full display while the Constitution is torn to pieces by these same people when they get back to their so-called elected posts that they've held for 30 Continue reading
Requiem for the Clintons
I swear to God for a moment there tonight at the Pepsi Center, as the rockin' pre-speech montage to Hillary was showing on the video screens ("Are You Gonna Go My Way?" Inspired!) ... my eyes welled up with something suspiciously close to a non-crocodile tear. I've never hated Hillary–at least until this year, anyway–but I've also never understood for one second why anyone found her to be an especially smart or interesting human being. As in most things political, this has put me squarely in s Continue reading

Thanks very much, Barbara Mikulski, for your very eloquent, your eloquent introduction. Distinguished legislator, great spokeswoman for economic democracy and social justice in this country, I thank you for your eloquent introduction. Well, things worked out a little different from the way I thought, but let me tell you, I still love New York. My fellow Democrats and my fellow Americans, I have come here tonight not to argue as a candidate but to affirm a cause. I'm asking you--I am asking yo Continue reading
Houston Memories
Houston Memories Houston Memories During my childhood, my family moved quite often due to my father s mining career. This nomad life led to many unique experiences and fond memories. In the late summer of 1970, we moved to Houston ” a small town in northern British Columbia. Here is where I find a treasure chest of childhood memories. I was a belligerent child and it often got me into trouble. While living in a subdivision, I was playing in the schoolyard with a few neighborhood kids. I said s Continue reading
Why John McCain’s Veep Choice Is So Tough
Why John McCain’s Veep Choice Is So Tough August 26th, 2008 by SHAUN MULLEN, TMV Columnist While Joe Biden brings a fair amount of baggage to the Barack Obama ticket, he was the best choice as a vice presidential running mate because of the balance he offers. Pity poor John McCain, because his choices will be exceedingly limited if he hopes to balance his ticket. What Did You Eat?
I don't usually get involved in the internet memes, but this one intrigued me. Andrew at Very Good Taste has put together a list of what he considers the 100 foods every omnivore should try. It's an interesting list and I wondered just how many of these foods I've actually tried. Boy was I surprised. The foods I've eaten are in bold/red. Some of these foods I needed to look up, as Andrew is based in England and they eat some strange stuff over there and sometimes the names change as you cross t Continue reading
Lehman, the Tooth Fairy and the Revenge of the Short-Sellers
Lehman Brothers Holdings received another blow this morning when a potential suitor–Korea Development Bank–received a rap on the knuckles from South Korea’s chief financial regulator. “In principle, taking over a global investment bank can become an opportunity to raise the capability of the [Korean] investment banking business,” Jun-Kwang Woo, the head of the country’s Financial Services Commission, told the Financial Times. “But at the same time, as the risks are also big, KDB should take a Continue reading

The Omnivore’s Hundred
The Omnivore’s Hundred Monday, August 25th, 2008 While catching up on my RSS feeds the other day, I stumbled across a food meme which originated on a food blog called Very Good Taste. It’s The Omnivore’s Hundred: a list of 100 foods that Andrew Wheeler of Very Good Taste thinks “every good omnivore should have tried at least once in their life.” It’s a random, entirely subjectively list, obviously, with an Anglo-American bias and some inclusions—and omissions—which seem startling at first Continue reading

An Open Letter to Partur
Partur sent this comment yesterday to a post I wrote some time ago, called "Belatedly, AZ Republic Blasts Immigrant Suffering": "Wow. I hardly know where to begin. "First, I want to make it clear that I don't wish death upon any of the people crossing the desert in search of a better life. I admire that kind of determination- we all want that for our families, and death should never be a result of our efforts to do so. “Murphy’s Law” by Jim Murphy The Bear on Aug 24 2008 | Filed under: Culture, Politics Greetings from the West Texas Headquarters for the Vast Right Wing Conspiratorial Smear Machine. Well another week has come to pass and finally this morning I was listening to the radio and heard that one of the major polls has John McCain ahead of Barack Hussein Obama by five points. Biden for Obama, Who for McCain?
Barack Obama selected Joe Biden to be his Vice Presidential running mate, come November. It ends a lot of speculation by the die hard Clinton fans, but let’s be honest. She was the last person he would pick, given who she is married to, and her own baggage. Least Joe Biden brings some experience, some down home earthiness that isn’t faked or dripping with crocodile tears, which Hilary would have brought. WASHINGTON - Barack Obama named Delaware Sen. Joe Biden as his vice presidential running m Continue reading
