Alternative Name
Horny Toad, Horned Toad Lizard, Horned Lizard
Scientific Name: Phrynosoma platyrhinos
Basic Info
Horned Toads are usually brown to gray in coloring, and measure between three and seven inches in length. Some are more creamy or white in color, and others may have colorful markings. It all depends on the Horned Toad's habitat, since it relies on its color for camouflage. They are spiny to discourage predators. The horns, which give these lizards their name, are actually modified scales over the back and sides of their heads. Horned Toads have large stomachs in order to hold lots of insects without hampering the animal's ability to move about. Children commonly catch Horned Toads, because their flat shape makes it rather difficult for them to move quickly or agilely. They generally have an overall round shape.
Health
Be careful when handling Horned Toads because they cannot regenerate their tails like the majority of lizards can. Their tails do not easily detach.
Breeding
Generally, Horned Toads will produce eggs or live young, depending on the species. The young grow extremely quickly.
Habitat
Southern Canada down to Guatemala
Behavior
The amazing little Horned Toad is actually quite common in many areas of the Americas and is gentle enough to be handled by the children who often enjoy catching these animals.
When a Horned Toad feels threatened, it may hiss and puff out its body to look larger. If the danger does not disperse, the Horned Toad will squirt blood out of glands located in the corners of its eyes in order to scare the attacker away. Its spine also protects it from the snakes, roadrunners and coyotes that try to eat it. To catch these insects, the Horned Toad will remain motionless until the prey comes close to it. It may take a few steps toward the insect, or if the prey is close enough, flick out its tongue to catch it. A Horned Toad can eat as much as 100 ants in just one day. Most of the water Horned Toads need is obtained from their food or from dew or raindrops on plants. It has been reported that the Horned Toad cannot handle fire ants. The rumor around central Texas is that the fire ant is responsible for the relative scarcity of the Horned Toad in this area. When it rains, Horned Toads use their backs to funnel water into their mouths. At night, the Horned Lizard burrows into the ground to bury itself a few inches beneath the surface and emerges in the day to bask. When they are too hot, Horned Toads will seek shade in a bush or may bury themselves. They can also hibernate in winter, and because of these adaptations, Horned Toads can inhabit climates from temperate woodlands to deserts.
Origin
North and South America
History
Horned Lizards, or Horned Toads as they are more commonly called, make their homes all the way from southern Canada down to Guatemala, effectively encompassing almost all of North and Central America. Called Horny Toads by many children, these gentle but frightening looking little lizards are a common sight in many warm or dry areas.
Common Foods
Horned Toads usually feed on insects and eat ants, beetles, grasshoppers and spiders to name a few prey items.

Bickford on amphibian extinctions
“Don’t let these amphibians croak their last,” by Grace Chua. The Straits Times, 20 Aug 2008. Up to half of all amphibian species could become extinct THAT croaky chorus you hear coming from drains at dusk could belong to one of Singapore’s most common amphibians - the Asian toad or the banded bullfrog. The toad has a burpy ‘curr, curr’ call and rough, warty skin, while the bullfrog is rotund, brown and cream, and ’sounds like a dying sheep,’ according to amphibian researcher David Bickfor Continue reading
Just A Barbed Wire Morning
We headed out early this morning trying to beat the heat which we did because we were home before ten. Stopped at the hospital cafeteria to eat some potatoes cooked with tomatoes and onions, sausage, bisquits, and filled up my steel mug for sipping. Our duty this morning was to check the fences for breaks on the back forty. John drives and I watch. I found one break and we stopped for him to "fix" it. Thats when I get to open my mug and sip. Don't dare when he is driving over the bumps. The deer Continue reading
Yep, More FotoFeed Pix
I’m slowly catching up, still a day or two behind, but there are four more to see. Meanwhile: here, for your viewing pleasure, is a baby horned toad. Yes, I finally “caught” one. This is a telephoto shot from about four feet away, cropped in Photoshop to bring it even closer. That’s one reason it’s a little blurry. The other reason is that I was in a hurry, obviously. And those are pine needles it’s clambering over, which should tell you something about the size (less than one inch long): I Continue reading

2006 Seattle Roadster Show
There seems to be several overlapping themes to this weekend’s Indy Car race Up North, Eh? As originally today was scheduled to be the 25th Anniversary of the Portland Champ Car race, which had been moved from its traditional Father’s Day weekend. (Saturday, March 4th, 2006) Thus it was with great irony that I’d been so insistent upon attending the Seattle Roadster Show, as it had been a long, long, long time since I had attended a ”Detroit Iron” Hot Rod show… In fact I think the last “Juan” wa Continue reading

Things like this never happen when I have my camera with me. Yesterday my wife and I took our exercise walk up the mesa. On the way back we saw two baby horned toads! These were two separate incidents, amazingly. And when I say “baby,” I mean tiny, about the size of my thumbnail. I took this relative abundance to be a good sign. After all, how many folks have ever seen a baby horned toad? A couple of years ago I saw two babies riding on their mother’s back, one of the most astonishing things Continue reading
Horned Lizard: Ancestor of the Jem’Hadar?
Every time I see a little horned lizard on my land, I’m reminded of the Jem’Hadar on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Their head shapes are very similar! I wonder if the Star Trek people used the horned lizard (a.k.a horny toad) as a model? Yesterday, my daughters discovered a rather large horned lizard who was digging a hole (from tip to tail, I’d guess him to be about the length of my hand - he was larger than we usually see). Here are some photographs and a video of this adorable lizard digging Continue reading

Bruce Willis wakes up in Rome, having been kidnapped and shipped via Stargate Cuboid shaped (Osiris coffin/box resonating) crate, after being attacked by the Candy Bars in "Hudson Hawk". One of the 4 Candy Bars is David Caruso a.k.a Kit Kat (KK) who in one scene assumes Hudson's identity, or "Twins" our Hawk. Willis as Hudson Hawk has the HH while Caruso as Kit Kat sees the KK. Much doubling resonance even further highlighted by the identity mimicking antics of Kit Kat. Behind Kit Kat we see a p Continue reading
Unveiling of the library horny toad
This poster hints at what what's hidden behind the burqa below -- the second new sculpture to be added to the downtown library's growing collection of art. Today was the big unveiling. Right at 1 p.m. The new Prescott Library Lizard is a horned toad, which is, properly speaking, not a toad but a lizard. When I was growing up, it was always toad; of course, we're far more sophisticated these days, so horned lizard it is. The young lady with the tail (above) is one of the mural mice, who is abou Continue reading
Fawns and Tadpoles and Toads, Oh My!
See the one horned buck on the left? He is very brave. He stands at the edge of the woods and when I call to him he comes forward. I get the bucket of corn and start to rattle it and he will start walking right towards me. As I throw the corn down he comes right up and starts to eat, even though I am only a few feet away. The does and fawns follow right behind but they are a bit more cautious. This is right on the edge of our driveway. I have seen at least 3 sets of twin fawns and some singleton Continue reading

All My Pets
I was thinking about all the pets I've had in my life and I'm going to try to list them all. Martin the Desert Tortoise. I was a baby and don't remember him much. My Bird. My parents were Deacons in the Presbyterian Church when I was very little. I was taught to pray for whatever I wanted. I prayed for a bird and I found one on the grass in our front yard one day when I was playing. It was a baby and it had fallen out of it's nest. I told my mom that God had answered my prayers and given me a Continue reading

The Great Oklahoma Road Trip #2: The Panhandle (Part Two)
At about 4 or 5 a.m. on Saturday, two animals were on the roof of the Bunkhouse playing, or fighting. It woke me up, and I slept the next hour or two restlessly, finally rising out of my bed just before dawn. I sat outside and watched the sun come up through the valley. Vicki had asked us the night before what time we’d like breakfast. We told her we were planning on hiking to the top of Black Mesa the next day, and she urged us to get an early start, offering to feed us at 6:30 so we could Continue reading

When Your Best Made Plans Go Horribly Wrong--Miss Butterfly Meets Mr. Horned Toad
Sometimes your best intentions can have very bad repercussions. Case in point: My love of wild things. When I moved to my little mountain here in Escondido, one of the first things I noticed was a large population of Monarch butterflies flitting about my yard and hanging around a patch of milk weed at the base of my hedge in the front yard. Seeing the Monarchs triggered two memories: First, Escondido was right in the path of the Monarch’s migration from Mexico to Monterey, CA; Second, I v Continue reading

Regal Horned Lizard
Regal Horned Lizard Written by T. Beth Kinsey on June 29, 2008 Regal Horned Lizards or Regal Horny Toads (Phrynosoma solare) are found in arid grasslands and in upland desertscrub areas in central to southeastern Arizona and northern Mexico. In May of 2008, I observed this Regal Horned Lizard in the grasslands of Arizona's Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge while walking my dogs. The lizard was hiding motionless in plain site alongside a trail, and it was so well-camouflaged that I nearly s Continue reading
